Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
